There are widespread examples throughout history of pest control experiments gone very wrong. Today, the stakes are really high, as scientists are increasingly turning to GE (genetic engineering) techniques to affect environmental change.

Already this year the Zika virus, which is carried by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, was declared a worldwide public health threat. And the focus turned to the idea of releasing GE mosquitoes to control populations of the culprit bugs.

Scientists created a male transgenic mosquito, which when released mates with females in the wild, carry destructive gene that gets transferred to the offspring, killing them before they reach breeding maturity.

To achieve this, protein fragments from the herpes virus, E. coli bacteria, coral and cabbage looper moth were inserted into the insects.

Biotech company Oxitec refers to their GE mosquitoes as a non-chemical insecticide, and these controversial bugs are a step closer to being released in the US.

The Big Q: Are we doing the right thing by waging war against bugs with toxic chemicals and GE insects?

Surely there is a price in human and environmental health to pay for this engineering activity.

Science is poisoning us and our world in the name of protecting the environment and public health, this is wrong thinking and wronger action.

There are options beyond the Big Chem solutions.

They include, ecologically sound regenerative methods of agriculture. Because, when nature is in balance, pests fail to gain the upper hand. They exist, but are kept in check naturally.

Once the soil microbial population is rebuilt, all else falls into place. This activity has been started by a small group of ecoRangers, farmers and forward looking financiers, using ancient proven techniques like biocharcoal (Bio-Char) and wood vinegar.

Not only are the plants healthier and more nutrient dense, they are more resistant to plant diseases and pests. Marigolds and roses, work as pest repellents by giving off a fragrance that bugs do not like.

Sure, they may not be as immediately effective as releasing a GE insect designed to decimate the entire species. But, keeping on the path science is headed will bring about more problems.

The natural options must be explored, and implement more long term solutions rather than thinking near term only. Our future depend on these Key decisions, as it is the world is heading in to the Toxic Era.

GMO’s (genetically modified organisms), or GE (genetically engineered) foods, are live organisms artificially manipulated in a laboratory creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacteria, and even viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods.

GMO proponents claim that GE is safe and beneficial, and that it advances the agricultural industry.

They also claim that GMO’s help ensure the global food supply and sustainability. I have never read anything that leads me to beleive that there is any truth to the industy claims.

I believe that GMO’s pose one of the greatest threats to life on our planet. Genetic engineering is not the safe and beneficial technology that it is said to be.

As I have written before in this column, the US FDA cleared the way for GE Atlantic Salmon to be farmed for human consumption. Thanks to added language in the federal spending bill, the fish “product” will require special labeling so at least people will have the ability to identify the GE Salmon in food stores.

It’s imperative all GE foods be labeled, so far that is not happening.

Many of us believe that the FDA is threatening our food supply by allowing this type of engineering, and in doing so our lives.  So, please share this article with friends, family, and social media. We can make a difference and put an end to this travesty.

Vermont’s mandatory labeling law is scheduled to go into effect on 1 July.

Now, Monsanto (NYSE:MON) is going with the only strategy it has left to block it, that is a US Senate version of HR 1599, also referred to as the DARK (Denying Americans the Right to Know) Act.

US Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan) introduced the bill, which would preempt Vermont’s GMO labeling law, and replace state mandatory labeling laws with a federal voluntary labeling plan.

Fortunately, on 16 March, the US Senate rightfully rejected the bill, falling far short of the 60 votes it needed to pass. Though the DARK Act was defeated, the battle is not over.

Senator Roberts said he would still work to find another way to preempt the law, and majority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) changed his vote from YES to NO for procedural reasons. This allows him to bring up the bill again later if a compromise is created, and the creation of such a compromise is certainly already underway.

Tell them to oppose any compromise that would block or delay Vermont’s labeling law.

The time is now for GMO labeling.
