The Thunderbird is a state of the art fishing ship with Captain Jeff Markland at the helm. Capt Jeff has extensive knowledge of the southern California fisheries with over 15 years in the industry. Captain Jeff’s passion is fishing and when he is not running the Thunderbird he will be fishing from surf, bay, coastal, freshwater you name it he has fished it. Still Capt Jeff loves fishing the offshore islands targeting giant white sea bass, yellowtail, and numerous other gamefish. Spring and early summer are one of his favorite times as this is when giant white sea bass move into the local islands. Action can be fast and furious and trophy sized sea bass are common, weighing 60 pounds or more.

Giant yellowtail are also commonly caught traveling with the white sea bass and can weigh 40 pounds or more. This type of fishing is very exciting fishing in close proximity to the shoreline and using live squid for bait. For each fish landed several will be lost due to sharp reefs and sheer force fishing chartersof the fish. Many other game fish are also caught including red snapper, ling cod, calico bass, sheepshead, bonito, halibut, and a dozen others. Hundreds of fish per trip is the norm for an overnight and double that for longer trips. Usually every cast results in a bite and you don’t know if it will be a 5 pound calico bass or a 50 pound white sea bass until your line screams off your reel as you hold on. The Thunderbird can sleep up to 40 persons and has lots of extra comforts including plush salon kitchen area, large stern area, huge bait capacity, and the best of electronics to aid in locating and catching game fish.

Some the more remote fishing destinations include the legendary Cortez Bank, Tanner Bank, Santa Barbara Island, San Clemente Island, Channel Islands, Southern Tuna Grounds, & Catalina Island.
