This dynamite super screaming prototipo debuted in Y 1971 and ended in Y 1973 when Scuderia Ferrari exited endurance racing to focus on Formula One.

The 312 PB was very successful, winning the 1972 World Sportscar Championship constructors’ title by winning 10 out of the 11 races on the calendar, per Conceptcarz.

That 11th race was the 1972 24 Hours of Le Mans, Enzo Ferrari did not think the car could go the distance. It did in Y 1973, when the Scuderia  finished 2nd to Matra.

This car is a wild sounding flat 12, once described as “gargling metal chunks over a loudspeaker”.

Ferrari did not come back into a purpose-built sportscar endurance racing prototype until the F50-engined 333 SP of the 1990’s. And then, Ferrari was only a constructor. The 312 PB was the last works entry.

Today, Ferrari fans only can hear the V8 sounds coming from the GT classes.
