Ferrari ‘Smokes” Top-end Tesla In A Drag Race

$FCAU, $TSLA

Few expected Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) to unveil a 691 hp electric Supercar last Fall, but came up with the Model S P85D. Even with its nearly 5,000 lb curb weight, the 691 hp Tesla P85D can outpace cars like the Challenger Hellcat and even a Lamborghini Aventador, in the 1st few secs.

But, the top-end Tesla does not fare well Vs the Ferrari, F12 Berlinetta

The lighter, more powerful Ferrari put the Tesla P85D down. The F12 came to the line with 730 hp to the Tesla’s 691, and while the 6.3 liter V12 makes just 509 lb-ft of torque, the Ferrari has a top speed of 220 MPH, the Model S is limited to just 130 MPH (155 with a special software patch).

It was a very 1-sided drag race, even if the P85D had compares favorably with some other competitors.

Work in Tesla’s favor is the the instant torque of electric motors, and the Dual Motor all-wheel drive system, which let the P85D get a jump on the F12 at the start line.

The lead did not last very long as the Ferrari’s V12 revved towards its Red Line and smoked the Tesla. The P85D can only do mid-11s in the Quarter-mile. That is certainly faster than 99% of cars on the road, but electric cars have a lot of catching up to do with internal combustion engine performance.

Ferrari is a unit of Fiat-Chrysler (NYSE:FCAU)

Formula E race cars can stay on the track for just about 30 mins at a time, but then drivers have to swap cars, not batteries. Improvements will likely come in time.

I am sticking with Ferrari, Tesla is a fadcar not a Supercar as I see it.

The author is comparing a base $350k 2-person sports car to a base $105k 5-passenger sedan and you don’t even have a video to show for it. Why don’t you compare the Tesla vs other sedans? Be fair. But what do you expect from some old fart who gets irked when people dare to compare an EV to his beloved gas powered ICE vehicles. Don’t be scared of progress.
