F1: Singapore Gran Prix, MercedesAMG’s Nico Rosberg on The Pole
Nico Rosberg in his MercedesAMG race has taken Pole for the 2016 Singapore Gran Prix at the Marina Bay circuit with the fastest recorded lap ever at the track – 1:42.584.
For Mr. Rosberg, it is his 7th Pole of the 2016 Formula One F1 season, and 29th of his career. He is now 8th on the all-time list tied with the great Juan Manuel Fangio.
For MercedesAMG, it is the team’s 14th Pole of the season.
The Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo turned a lap half a secs behind Mr. Rosberg to come 2nd on the grid.
Lewis Hamilton and his MercedesAMG racer was 3rd quickest with a lap of 1:43.280. He will be fighting the field to keep 3rd, and hope to chase down his team mate to retain his championship lead.
Qualifying 4th was Max Verstappen in his Red Bull followed by Kimi Raikkonen in his Ferrari.
Eyes will be on Mr. Rosberg in Sunday’s race he will be very hard to overtake if he gets off smartly at the start.
Overtaking opportunities are hard to come by at Marina Bay, which explains why 6 of the last 8 winners in Singapore have started from Pole.
In Q1, Ferrari’s chances of catching MercedesAMG at the top of the constructors’ standings suffered a blow, as Sebastian Vettel was forced to retire.
Mr. Vettell experienced mechanical issues with his car, and the team did not have time to fix them ahead of Q2. So, now Mr. Vettel will start Sunday’s Gran Prix at the very back on the grid.
After the incident, Mr. Vettel told reporters that he was very disappointed with the qualifying situation
Next up, the 2016 Singapore Gran Prix under the lights Sunday night.
