Ferrari (NYSE:RACE) will be in a 3-way run with F1 rivals MercedesAMG and Red Bull for the Singapore Grand Prix Pole.
Friday, Kimi Raikkonen finished Friday’s practice 0.275 secs behind pacesetter Nico Rosberg, as the Top 4, which included the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo, were separated by just 0.4secs.
Only at Monaco has a MercedesAMG driver not claimed Pole position this year, but it could all be up for grabs Saturday.
Ferrari will be fighting with MercedesAMG and Red Bull for the front row on the grid.
Mr. Raikkonen’s team-mate Sebastian Vettel, pole sitter and winner in Singapore last year, finished the day with a 5th best time.
“My lap wasn’t good enough,” he said. “Kimi had a very good lap.
“I wasn’t entirely happy, I was struggling a bit with the car balance and therefore not really finding the rhythm, but all in all it’s been a good day.
“Tomorrow is important, it’s very difficult to pass here so we try to trim everything towards qualifying.
“If we get everything right, it will be very tight but we have a good chance to position the car well.”
Speaking about the pace of rivals MercedesAMG and Red Bull, Mr. Vettel said: “Both looked very strong.
“Mercedes is the favorite and we are in the same boat as Red Bull.”
There has been speculation that the US company Liberty Media (NASDAQ:LMCA), who completed an $8-B takeover of F1 this month, might want to create a more level playing field within F1 by spreading money around more evenly, which will meet resistance from some of teams such as Ferrari, MercedesAMG, and Red Bull.
In the past Ferrari has quarreled with the FIA, F1’s ruling body, threatening to start building cars for American series saying we will start an American F1 series.
