F1: Austria, MBZ’s Hamilton Tops P2, Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel 2nd
Lewis Hamilton lead the way in FP2 for Formula 1’s Austrian Grand Prix Friday.
The MercedesAMG driver posted a 1m05.483s that put him 0.147s clear of Sebastian Vettel’s Ferrari (NYSE:RACE).
Mr. Hamilton’s best was 1/2sec quicker than he went in the morning, when he posted the fastest lap in the 2.68-mi circuit’s history.
Mr. Vettel prevented a MercedesAMG 1-2 by edging Valtteri Bottas by less than a tennie, aka 1/10sec.
Mr. Bottas used super-softs to lower the benchmark to a 1m06.690s, then became the 1st driver to dip below Hamilton’s FP1 best with a 1m05.869s.
Mr. Bottas and Mr. Hamilton traded fastest laps before Messrs Hamilton and Vettel failed to convert session-best individual sectors into an overall improvement while trying to match Mr. Bottas’s new best of 1m05.700s.
After pitting for ultra-soft tires Mr. Bottas then set the fastest 1st and 2nd sectors of the session, but ran wide at Turn 9 and only managed to improve by 0.001s.
Mr. Bottas was truly lucky to avoid the barriers after sliding through the gravel trap on the exit of Turn 6 and spinning out, and then Ferrari’s Mr. Vettel removed him from Top Spot immediately after with an ultra-soft lap of 1m05.630s.
A couple of mins later Mr. Hamilton capped the flurry of ultra-soft efforts at the end of the opening 30 mins with a 1m05.483s that remained unbeaten on the day, as drivers switched to race preparation.
Both the Red Bulls outpaced Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, Max Verstappen beating Daniel Ricciardo to 4th despite missing most of the opening 30 mins with a brake problem.
