Box Office: ‘Finding Dory’ Tops the Weekend
Steven Spielberg’s ‘The BFG’ DOA in North America over the July 4th weekend, ‘Legend of Tarzan’ in trouble, ‘The Purge: Election Year’ rallies.
Disney’s (NYSE:DIS) Finding Dory is the champ of the long holiday weekend at #1 in its 3rd frame.
The weekend box office is +40%, thanks to Finding Dory and other holdovers.
Finding Dory earned $41.4-M from 4,305 theaters for the 3-day weekend, and $50.2-M for the long 4-day holiday, Finding Dory dominated overseas, taking another $34.4-M.
Finding Dory’s domestic box office take through Monday is $380.5-M, globally it has earned $550-M.
Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow’s The Legend of Tarzan bowed at # 2 in North America with a 3-day take of $38.5-M from 3,561 theaters and an estimated 4-day gross of $45.6-M, troubling, as the movie has a $180-M production budget.
The holiday’s winner is Universal’s, a unit of Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) The Purge: Election Year, which cost just $10-M to make.
The horror 3-quel placed # 3 with a 3-day tally of $31.4-M from 2,796 theaters and an estimated 4-day box office take of $34.8-M. Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes produced the pic for Universal. Audiences are not tired of the idea of the Purge.
Disney and Spielberg’s The BFG, with a net budget of $140-M, was DOA in North America, where the family film earned $18.6-M for the 3-day weekend from 3,357 locations. The movie’s 4-day debut is a grim $22.3-M.
In North America, Legend of Tarzan earned an A- CinemaScore. The movie skewed slightly female at 51%, while nearly 70% of the audience was over the age of 25.
The BFG flailed in its North American box office debut despite solid reviews and an A- CinemaScore. It is the 1st time Mr. Spielberg has directed a movie for Disney, which partnered with the filmmaker’s Amblin Entertainment and Walden Media. The family film skewed female at 54%.
