It has Begun, Illegal Immigrants Being Rounded Up, Detained and…
A record number of immigrants are being held by the US government in detention facilities as migrants arrive in very high numbers.
About 41,000 are currently being held in immigration detention facilities, up from a “typical” number of between 31,000 and 34,000, Jeh Johnson, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), said in a news release Thursday. The government is acquiring additional space for those apprehended at the border so they can be held until they are returned to their home countries, he said.
“Those who attempt to enter our country without authorization should know that, consistent with our laws and our values, we must and we will send you back,” the Secretary said.
The election of Donald Trump Tuesday has put immigration in the headlights, as he made the topic a Keystone of his campaign.
The Republican has promised to build a Wall and deport the more than 11-M undocumented immigrants in the US Immigrants and advocacy groups are on edge about what their future could bring under a Trump administration.
Donald Trump’s victory sent stocks in private prison companies soaring Wednesday.
In October, US border officials captured just over 46,000 people who were trying to sneak in between official ports of entry, up 16% over the prior month, the Secretary said.
Apprehensions by US Customs and Border Protection in the fiscal year ended 30 September totaled almost 409,000, up 23% over FY 2015.
While immigration groups are nervous about what a Donald Trump Presidency might hold, expect it to be harsh, rounding up, locking up immigrants and asylum seekers and deporting them back to their homelands.
President Donald Trump will build the Wall, Mexico will pay for it.
