AP Debuts The Michael Schumacher Royal Oak Concept Laptimer

Early Friday, Audemars Piquet shifted into high gear with the surprise announcement of a brand new Michael Schumacher-inspired Royal Oak Offshore watch.

Just 3 yrs after the introduction of the Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph Michael Schumacher, the brand’s most celebrated and commercially successful Ambassador-timepiece, the luxury watchmaker is launched the 2nd AP chronograph to carry the name of the celebrated Formula One Ferrari racing champion.

There have been many super days at Audemars Piguet, and Friday will go down as one of them. That because it almost did not make the brand’s calendar. For many reasons, not the least of which is the concern over Michael Schumacher’s slow recovery from a ski accident in Y 2013, the Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher might have been a watch that “could have been.”

According to AP, the project began in Y 2010, when Michael Schumacher challenged its engineers to create a mechanical wristwatch capable of timing and comparing consecutive lap times. Up until now, such a task required the handling of 2 or more stop watches, set up to time 1 lap each.

But after almost 5 yrs of development, Audemars Piguet presented the world’s 1st luxury watch to feature 2 angular indexing systems on a single chronograph, each with an independent memory.

During a special ceremony at the Schumacher family farm outside Geneva, Audemars Piguet said it decided to proceed with the launch according to Michael Schumacher’s wish with the full support of his family, and said it was “honoured to be able to pay tribute to the greatest F1 driver of all time.”

The new watch celebrates another 1st in AP’s history, as it is the 1st time that the brand develops a movement from scratch for one of its Ambassadors.

The watch is technically brilliant, a stunning design, that epitomizes the very best qualities of the sporty Royal Oak Offshore.

The AP Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher features a 44 mm case made from forged Carbon, a material previously used to great effect in the Audemars Piguet Concept watches such as the Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Tourbillon Chronograph.

The bezel, case edges and caseback are made from Titanium and the pushpieces from ceramic and pink Gold. The blackened open worked dial, like the back of the watch, is protected by a glare-proofed sapphire crystal with the watch being supplied on a black rubber strap with a Titanium AP clasp.

A in his previous watch, the Royal Oak Concept Laptimer Michael Schumacher contains several references of his racing legacy, including 7 Stars on the left side of the case in honor of his 7 F1 World Championship titles, as well as his hand-signature on the laptimer pushpiece.

This AP collector timepiece is limited to 221 examples in recognition of the number of points winning races in which Michael Schumacher competed in F1 racing.

Have a terrific Memorial Day weekend.
