Amelia Island: RM Sotheby’s Auction Preview

The RM Sotheby’s Amelia Island 2015 auction will be held Saturday.

It will be the 1st auction for the new RM- Sotheby’s tie-up. There will be 100 automobiles and memorabilia for the 1-day  of fast selling event ahead of the annual Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Sunday.

14 collector cars are on offer at the 17th annual RM Sotheby’s Amelia Island sale that have pre-sale estimates of $1-M+, 10 of them have $2-M+ estimates.

The Headline entries are: 1960 Ferrari 400 Superamerica SWB Cabriolet by Pininfarina; 1955 Jaguar D-Type; 1988 Jaguar XJR-9; 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider; 1935 Mercedes-Benz 500/540 K Cabriolet A by Sindelfingen; 1931 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport Spider by Zagato; 1971 Lamborghini Miura SV; 1967 Shelby 427 ‘SC’ Cobra and 1953 Ferrari 212 Europa Coupe by Vignale.

N09452_145The 1960 Ferrari 400 Superamerica SWB Cabriolet, c/n 1945 SA, is #3 of the 7  SWB Superamericas produced. Auction Est. $6,000,000 – $7,000,000). Proceeds from the Ferrari sale will go to support the owner’s foundation for the education of children.


The Jaguar D-Type, XKD 530, is 1 of 54 D-Types produced for private use, it was delivered new to Curt Lincoln (Finland). A subsequent owner commissioned a restoration by Jaguar experts completed in Y 2003. It has run the Mille Miglia 4 times. Auction Est. $3,750,000 – $4,250,000.


The works Jaguar XJR-9, # 388, on offer was the last of the 3 cars built for the 1988 IMSA GT Championship, run by Tom Walkinshaw Racing (TWR), and the only remaining example of just 2 XJR-9 chassis ever manufactured as purpose-built IMSA specification cars. Chassis 388 was fully developed into XJR-12 specification in 1990 and went on to win the season’s headline event, the 24 Hours of Daytona, in the hands of Davey Jones, Jan Lammers and Andy Wallace. The racer finished 2nd overall at the Y 1989 running of the Daytona 24 Hours and finish 3rd at Sebring in Y 1990. Auction Est. $3,000,000 – $5,000,000.


The 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Spider, c/n 15417 was delivered new in the US by Chinetti Motors. The Daytona Spider received a Platinum Award at the Y 2013 Cavallino Classic. Auction Est. $3,000,000 – $3,500,000


The 1953 Ferrari 212 Europa Coupe is an early Vignale-bodied example, 1 of 6 constructed. It was built for American sportsman Thomas Neelands. Auction Est. $2,000,000 – $2,500,000.
